The side panel of a standard city bus commonly runs 2.8 to 3 metres in height. A trailer or semi-trailer may need seamless graphics output across 4 to 5 metres. Print width sets the ceiling on what’s achievable in a single pass — and determines whether a job requires a visible join, with all the colour-matching precision that entails.
Fleet clients expect matched colour not just across a single run, but across re-orders months apart. Extended gamut — light cyan, light magenta, and light black alongside base CMYK — closes the gap in photographic areas, gradients, and brand palettes that standard four-colour printing renders inconsistently.
Cast vinyl behaves differently under a heat gun than flat signage media. An ink system for vehicle wrap use needs super elongation characteristics: the ability to stretch with vinyl during heat application without cracking or delaminating. At 50 or 100 vehicles, throughput in ft²/hr is the variable that determines whether a fleet job fits your machine time commercially. It is not a secondary consideration.
Producing graphics for a single vehicle and producing graphics for a fleet of 50 are different jobs in ways that go beyond print volume.
Colour management becomes a system. On a one-off vehicle wrap, colour variation is a QC task. On a fleet job, it’s a production obligation. The client expects vehicle 50 to match vehicle 1 — and expects the re-order 18 months later to match both. The highest-throughput option in the 3.48-metre class, the X3r is built for truck side curtain production at volume. It carries EFI’s PRINT–COAT–CUT inline workflow — printing, coating, and cutting in a single pass — eliminating sequential post-print steps that slow high-volume curtain-side jobs. CMYK with optional white ink and a clear coat. Up to 1200 dpi.
The Q5r and Q3r are the extended gamut models in the lineup — seven-colour output for tighter fleet colour matching, one at superwide for full vehicle wrap work, one at 3.5 metres for truck side curtain production.
The Q5r is EFI’s dedicated fleet and vehicle graphics platform. At 5.2 metres and 1200 dpi, it covers buses, large trucks, trailers, and full fleet wraps without a join. The 5r+ and 3r+ bring extended gamut to both the superwide and 3.5-metre class. The 5r+ also supports EFI–3M SuperFlex Ink for vehicle graphics applications requiring the 3M MCS Warranty.
The 5r+ offers extended colour gamut at 5.2 metres — CMYK plus optional lc, lm, lk, white, and clear — with a low total cost of ownership. For vehicle graphics, it supports EFI–3M SuperFlex Ink, qualifying for the seven-year 3M MCS Warranty for vehicle graphics. Inline finishing, white ink and multi-layer printing, and EFI UltraClear Coat (gloss or matte, up to five years of outdoor protection) are available as options. The Q5r is the wider model — at 5.2 metres print width, it covers full bus panels, large truck graphics, and trailer wraps in a single pass. The X3r and Q3r sit at 3.4–3.5 metres and are positioned specifically for truck side curtain production using the PRINT–COAT–CUT inline workflow. The Q5r is also the model that supports EFI–3M SuperFlex Ink and the seven-year 3M MCS Warranty for vehicle graphics; the X3r and Q3r do not carry that warranty.
The X3r, Q3r, 3r+, Pro 33r, and Pro 32r+ all support EFI’s PRINT–COAT–CUT inline workflow for truck side curtain production. The Q5r, X5r, and 5r+ do not carry this workflow — they are optimised for wide-format vehicle and fleet graphics at 5-metre width.
The EFI VUTEk 3r+ is typically the right entry point for a mid-scale converter building vehicle graphics capability alongside existing work. As fleet volume grows and throughput becomes the constraint, upgrading to X3r or Q3r is a straightforward progression.
EFI–3M SuperFlex Ink is an optional configuration available on both the Q5r and the 5r+. Both models support standard ink configurations as well. The seven-year 3M MCS Warranty for vehicle graphics applies specifically when either model is configured with SuperFlex Ink. For fleet work where warranty documentation matters, SuperFlex Ink is the recommended configuration on either model.
Both are 5.2-metre roll-to-roll printers, but the X5r is the higher-throughput model at up to 751 m²/hr versus the Q5r’s 672 m²/hr. The trade-off is ink configuration: the X5r runs CMYK without extended gamut (lc, lm, lk), while the Q5r adds extended gamut and EFI–3M SuperFlex Ink with a seven-year 3M MCS Warranty for vehicle graphics.
