Fleet Wraps and Vehicle Graphics: The EFI VUTEk Roll-to-Roll Production Case

The fleet graphics opportunity print shops shouldn’t ignore

Fleet graphics is a category where the production challenge scales with the opportunity. A logistics operator standardising livery across 40 trucks, a city transit authority deploying a new bus network, a courier company refreshing brand across a national delivery fleet — these aren’t one-time print jobs. They’re production programmes that require the right equipment, the right ink system, and repeatable colour management from the outset.

The production challenge is real. PSPs who have tried to run fleet wrap work on equipment not built for it know the problems: substrate widths that don’t cover bus panels cleanly, UV inks that crack when vinyl is heated during application, colour drift between vehicle 10 and vehicle 60. These aren’t quality control failures. They’re equipment mismatches.

Solving them means investing in large format printing solutions with the width, ink system, and throughput that fleet wrap production actually demands. This post covers what that production work requires at fleet scale, and which EFI VUTEk large format printers are built for it — available through Arrow Digital in India.

Why vehicle wrap demand is rising in India

India’s commercial vehicle ecosystem creates print demand at a scale few markets can match. The logistics sector — estimated at US$228 billion in 2024 (Grand View Research; IBEF) and projected to nearly double by 2033 — is consolidating around major operators who need consistent brand presentation across large fleets. That’s not a fleet manager’s concern. It’s a repeatable print production problem.

The PM-eBus Sewa scheme is putting 10,000 new electric buses on roads across Indian cities — every one a vehicle graphics requirement.

The out-of-home (OOH and DOOH) advertising market adds a commercial layer. India’s OOH and DOOH market is estimated at USD 543.21 million in 2026 and forecast to reach USD 676.96 million by 2031 (Mordor Intelligence), with transit and vehicle-based advertising a rising share of that spend, driven by advertiser preference for mobile, high-traffic formats in urban corridors.

What fleet wrap production actually requires from a printer

Fleet wrap work makes specific demands of printing equipment that general large format print work doesn’t always share.

Print width

The side panel of a standard city bus commonly runs 2.8 to 3 metres in height. A trailer or semi-trailer may need seamless graphics output across 4 to 5 metres. Print width sets the ceiling on what’s achievable in a single pass — and determines whether a job requires a visible join, with all the colour-matching precision that entails.

Colour consistency

Fleet clients expect matched colour not just across a single run, but across re-orders months apart. Extended gamut — light cyan, light magenta, and light black alongside base CMYK — closes the gap in photographic areas, gradients, and brand palettes that standard four-colour printing renders inconsistently.

Ink performance on vehicle substrates

Cast vinyl behaves differently under a heat gun than flat signage media. An ink system for vehicle wrap use needs super elongation characteristics: the ability to stretch with vinyl during heat application without cracking or delaminating. This is a specification to verify against the product, not assume.

Throughput

At 50 or 100 vehicles, throughput in ft²/hr is the variable that determines whether a fleet job fits your machine time commercially. It is not a secondary consideration.

What changes when you move to fleet-scale production

Producing graphics for a single vehicle and producing graphics for a fleet of 50 are different jobs in ways that go beyond print volume.

Colour management becomes a system. On a one-off vehicle wrap, colour variation is a QC task. On a fleet job, it’s a production obligation. The client expects vehicle 50 to match vehicle 1 — and expects the re-order 18 months later to match both. Colour profiles, substrate calibration, and ink configuration need to be documented and repeatable, not rebuilt from scratch for each run.

Turnaround has a different shape. Fleet clients often operate within deployment windows — a vehicle launch date, a route start, a campaign rollout. The printer’s job isn’t just to produce correct output; it’s to produce it at volume within a compressed schedule. Machine throughput and uptime matter in a way they often don’t on one-off work.

Error tolerance drops. A colour drift on a one-off job can usually be corrected or absorbed. A colour drift discovered on vehicle 40 of a 50-vehicle fleet is a reprint problem. The equipment running fleet work needs to hold specification across a full production run, not just a single pass.

These are the operational realities that make equipment choice consequential for fleet wrap production — and why the right roll-to-roll platform matters before the first fleet job comes in.

EFI VUTEk X5r / X3r — Throughput-first, at superwide and curtain width

The X5r and X3r are the throughput-optimised models in the lineup — one at 5.2 metres for large vehicle and fleet graphics, the other at 3.48 metres for high-volume truck side curtain production.

EFI VUTEk X5r · 5.2 m (208 in) · up to 8,084 ft²/hr

The highest-throughput model in the EFI roll-to-roll lineup, the X5r is built for large-scale production where output speed and substrate width are the headline requirements. At 5.2 metres print width and 1200 dpi true resolution, it handles any vehicle or fleet graphics format in a single pass. Full-shift unattended operation is supported through Nozzle Compensation, Wrinkle Analyzer, inline roll-length verification, and mobile operator alerts. LED curing extends substrate range and reduces operating costs. Optional white ink and EFI UltraClear Coat add inline protective finishing with up to five years of outdoor protection.

EFI VUTEk X3r · 3.48 m (137 in) · up to 6,566 ft²/hr

The highest-throughput option in the 3.48-metre class, the X3r is built for truck side curtain production at volume. It carries EFI’s PRINT–COAT–CUT inline workflow — printing, coating, and cutting in a single pass — eliminating sequential post-print steps that slow high-volume curtain-side jobs. CMYK with optional white ink and a clear coat. Up to 1200 dpi.

EFI VUTEk Q5r / Q3r — Extended gamut and fleet-grade colour accuracy

The Q5r and Q3r are the extended gamut models in the lineup — seven-colour output for tighter fleet colour matching, one at superwide for full vehicle wrap work, one at 3.5 metres for truck side curtain production.

EFI VUTEk Q5r · 5.2 m (208 in) · up to 7,233 ft²/hr

The Q5r is EFI’s dedicated fleet and vehicle graphics platform. At 5.2 metres and 1200 dpi, it covers buses, large trucks, trailers, and full fleet wraps without a join. A key differentiator is EFI–3M SuperFlex Ink — providing super elongation for heat installation without cracking, extended colour gamut via the seven-colour configuration (CMYK plus lc, lm, lk), and the Q5r with SuperFlex Ink qualifies for a seven-year 3M MCS Warranty for vehicle graphics. Optional white ink and clear coat for dark-substrate and protective applications.

EFI VUTEk Q3r · 3.5 m (138 in) · up to 6,006 ft²/hr

The Q3r adds extended gamut (lc, lm, lk) to the 3.5-metre class alongside the full PRINT–COAT–CUT inline workflow for truck side curtains. For fleet accounts where precise brand colour matching matters as much as throughput, the Q3r closes the gap that four-colour-only output cannot. Up to 1200 dpi.

EFI VUTEk 5r+ / 3r+ — Extended gamut with SuperFlex capability at mid-volume

The 5r+ and 3r+ bring extended gamut to both the superwide and 3.5-metre class. The 5r+ also supports EFI–3M SuperFlex Ink for vehicle graphics applications requiring the 3M MCS Warranty.

EFI VUTEk 5r+ · 5.2 m (208 in) · up to 5,242 ft²/hr

The 5r+ offers extended colour gamut at 5.2 metres — CMYK plus optional lc, lm, lk, white, and clear — with a low total cost of ownership. For vehicle graphics, it supports EFI–3M SuperFlex Ink, qualifying for the seven-year 3M MCS Warranty for vehicle graphics. Inline finishing, white ink and multi-layer printing, and EFI UltraClear Coat (gloss or matte, up to five years of outdoor protection) are available as options. Multi-roll printing supports up to three rolls of 63 inches simultaneously. Up to 1200 dpi.

EFI VUTEk 3r+ · 3.5 m (138 in) · up to 4,370 ft²/hr

The 3r+ carries PRINT–COAT–CUT alongside extended gamut (lc, lm, lk) — the right entry point for converters building both truck side curtain and colour-accurate fleet graphics capability. It provides the correct width, ink configuration, and inline workflow without committing to X3r or Q3r throughput levels. As fleet volume grows, the step to Q3r or X3r is a natural progression. Up to 1200 dpi.

EFI Pro 33r / Pro 32r+ — Pro series for accessible vehicle graphics production

The EFI Pro 33r and Pro 32r+ are 3.2-metre (126 in) roll-to-roll printers from EFI’s Pro series. Both carry PRINT–COAT–CUT for truck side curtain production and EFI–3M SuperRange UV LED Ink with the 3M MCS Warranty when printing on 3M flexible media — the accessible entry point for print shops building vehicle graphics and signage capability.

EFI Pro 33r · 3.2 m (126 in) · up to 3,692 ft²/hr

The Pro 33r is an entry-level production roll-to-roll LED printer with 5pL printheads delivering 1200 dpi true resolution. It supports PRINT–COAT–CUT for truck side curtains, LED curing for substrate versatility and lower operating costs, EFI UltraClear Coat (matte, three-year outdoor protection), and optional white ink for backlit and dark-substrate applications. EFI–3M SuperRange UV LED Ink provides the 3M MCS Warranty when printing on 3M flexible media.

Frequently asked questions

The Q5r is the wider model — at 5.2 metres print width, it covers full bus panels, large truck graphics, and trailer wraps in a single pass. The X3r and Q3r sit at 3.4–3.5 metres and are positioned specifically for truck side curtain production using the PRINT–COAT–CUT inline workflow. The Q5r is also the model that supports EFI–3M SuperFlex Ink and the seven-year 3M MCS Warranty for vehicle graphics; the X3r and Q3r do not carry that warranty.

The X3r, Q3r, 3r+, Pro 33r, and Pro 32r+ all support EFI’s PRINT–COAT–CUT inline workflow for truck side curtain production. The Q5r, X5r, and 5r+ do not carry this workflow — they are optimised for wide-format vehicle and fleet graphics at 5-metre width.

The EFI VUTEk 3r+ is typically the right entry point for a mid-scale converter building vehicle graphics capability alongside existing work. It gives you the correct substrate width, ink configuration, and PRINT–COAT–CUT workflow at a throughput level that matches most operations at the start. As fleet volume grows and throughput becomes the constraint, upgrading to X3r or Q3r is a straightforward progression.

EFI–3M SuperFlex Ink is an optional configuration available on both the Q5r and the 5r+. Both models support standard ink configurations as well. The seven-year 3M MCS Warranty for vehicle graphics applies specifically when either model is configured with SuperFlex Ink. For fleet work where warranty documentation matters, SuperFlex Ink is the recommended configuration on either model.

Both are 5.2-metre roll-to-roll printers, but the X5r is the higher-throughput model at up to 751 m²/hr versus the Q5r’s 672 m²/hr. The trade-off is ink configuration: the X5r runs CMYK without extended gamut (lc, lm, lk), while the Q5r adds extended gamut and EFI–3M SuperFlex Ink with a seven-year 3M MCS Warranty for vehicle graphics. Choose X5r when throughput is the primary constraint; choose Q5r when colour accuracy, extended gamut, or warranty documentation are client requirements.
